Happy Random Acts of Kindness Day!

Hongcun Village

Happy Friday!  Today is Random Acts of Kindness Day, and I wanted to share a story during my travels to Huangshan Mountain & Hongcun Village in Asia.

During your travels around the world, you may experience frustrations – we all have had snafus along the way.  There are times where things don’t always go right and you feel like all you can do is throw up your hands and roll with the punches.  However, random acts of kindness also happen during your travels and can help alleviate your problems and make your day a bit brighter.

This short anecdote involves airline tickets.  After visiting the beautiful Hongcun village (featured above), my travel companions and I stopped by a cafe to dry off and drink some coffee after being caught in the rain.  We had several hours before we had to head to the airport and we met the owner of the cafe & hostel, who sat down and spoke with us for a while.  When we packed up and left his establishment, he waved us good-bye and gave us his business card.

Turns out, when we arrived at the airport, our airline tickets had been booked for the wrong date – we were scheduled on a flight for the following day and not for the evening we had arrived.  All of us were so flustered in the small Chinese airport, throwing up our hands and trying not to be frustrated with one another, especially since none of us could communicate what had happened to the airline staff.  Evidently, there was a man at the airport who came over and asked if he could assist us, who turned out to be the owner of the hostel!  He was able to negotiate with the airlines on our behalf and got us 6 tickets on the flight we had intended to be on, without even flinching.  It was this random act of kindness that got us all home safely and he didn’t ask for anything in return.  He wished us well and sent us on our way.  We were so relieved and to this day, I hope to return back to that cafe & hostel just to thank the man for his kindness.

What random acts of kindness have you experienced on the road?
