Advice on route before and after tour

Hey all, I'm thinking about doing the Berlin to Budapest tour. A friend of mine recommended flying into Frankfurt then taking a train or bus to Berlin to start the tour. It ends in Hungary so I was thinking afterwards of taking a train back west to Switzerland for a couple days then back up to Frankfurt to fly out. Does anyone have any thoughts or advice?
Also I'm thinking of going around Sept-Oct so if anyone is going drop me a line.
