Las Vegas Wedding?

This is a very silly question, but something I am wondering non the less.
The friend I am traveling with thought it would be a "funny" idea to get hitched in Vegas...because well it's Vegas. I'm sure it is funny, but I am also pretty sure it's legally reconised.
Now I am no lawyer, so I am asking for any punters knowledge here. If one were to get hitched in Vegas and were both Australian citizens, then would this marriage be legally reconised when the went home?
