New to Iphone, Can I use Data on a sim card?

3 Aug 2009 Smileeem asked

I have recently bought the new Iphone and will be taking it with me on my 5 week trip to Europe. I dont necessarily want to use it to call people but will send sms' and would like to use applications such as google maps and other travel related apps. If I buy a sim card will I be able to use data, rather than roaming. My service provider, Optus will charge me $0.02 per KB. That $20 per MB. Woah!!

I start my holiday in London for 5 days then the rest in Europe. Would I be best getting a sim card in London. Will that one card do me for the whole time I'm away??
