Any Advice on Hotels in Athens?

I'm thinking of staying in Athens the weekend before my trip, a nice 3 days of just sinking in that I finally made it to Greece, you know?
Anybody has advice on good but not too expensive hotels? I looked online but it's really hard to figure out which area is safe or not.....
