Day Pack?

What are people using for day packs? In addition to my money belt, I'm planning on a small-ish backpack, but I'm worried its a) going to be too big, heavy and a hassle and b) look too tourist-y. On the other hand, my purse-sized bag might be too small (especially if I need it to carry a jacket or for an overnight bag), or worse, get too heavy to carry on my shoulder all day. What do people usually pack for the day? Any thoughts or recommendations are appreciated!
