Can you use a credit card for optional excursions? I hope so, because I would hate to have to carry around all that cash.

    You dont have to worry.

Your TM will arrange all the excursions and keep a tab of each person and you will pay what you owe to him or her at the end of the tour by cash or credit card.

    Credit card is highly recommended.

Most TM ask for cash though. Between my friends and I we have been on a grand total of 15 tours and all of them the TM asked for cash a couple of days into the trip for the optionals (you are given a form to fill out listing which ones you want to do).

However they will warn you in advance that they are going to collect money and that their is a bank or ATM nearby.

Euro is cash only for optionals. NZ is what ever you choose (ie: TC/cash/credit cards accepted) – most used credit cards. Optional payments are generally done once on the South Island and once in the North Island.

having a pin number on ur card is a good idea as all nz cards do and this avoids problems at shops

I did the NZ Explorer in Feb 2010, and my credit card didn’t always work to pay my TM & at some shops. I would usually just go to a bank machine and take out cash.
