Backpack or handbag with wheels?

I've been reading that a backpack is essential for the day excursions to carry things like water/other items you want to bring.
Did most people also bring a mini suitcase/handbag with wheels as the main handbag? Or just a suitcase/big backpack + a smaller backpack for the day excursions.
I was thinking of bring a suitcase with wheels, the handbag with wheels and a backpack to fold in my suitcase. Should I forget about the handbag with wheels?
