The worst tour I have ever joined.

I just came back from Contiki inspiration tour. I have to be very honest to say this is the worst tour I have ever joined.

The whole journey is full of alocoholic, the tour manager was arranging partying and drinking nearly every night, which is fine as everyone’s purpose for this trip is different.

However, the tour manager doesn’t really look after the other people who are not that into partying or drinking. Also these party animals have been making noise and being rude to people, even while people were sleeping. Then the tour manager just have said to people that to tolerante each other, not to respect! I found it is so rediculous as I paid nearly £1500 to suffer in this journey rather than sightseeing. For the best example, during the time we were in Switzerland, we supposed to take the pilatus (cable car) to see the mountain, but the weather was foggy, so the tour guide just cancelled it without asking people’s willing, and we had spent nearly all day in city for shopping mainly. I meant come on, even the weather was smoky, we can still take the pilatus to experience rather than just spent nearly all day in city centre. Then we have been taking back for hotel for the terrible dinner, and then the tour manager arranged another drinking night again.

Moreover, during the journey, even the outdoor tempature was about 3 or 5 degree C, the coach was still turning air conditioner on, and made many people suffer in the damn cold, even myself got a fever for 2 days. Just because the tour manager didn’t really look after everyone’s willing but small group’s happiness.

The other thing I’ve found rediculous is while we were in Rome, we had been taking to a restaurant, I couldn’t find a seat, but the tour manager just sat there and start eating, rather to consider what has happened. As my travel experience in the past, the tour manager supposed to look after everyone’s then take his own seat and start his dinner, but to follow this tour – No! All you can get is you better to look after yourself and still need to pay polite tips, which is absolutely ironic.

The funniest thing is we have been told in the beginning of this trip- The Contiki tour is to experience rather than having a holiday, but all I have been experience in this tour is being bothered by these bloody party animals and drinking for 19 days.

This is absolutely disappointed trip ever. I wrote this just to warm some people, if you perfer to have a definitely nice journey with cultured in Europe, you better to consider other tour company rather than Contiki. In the other hand, if you are a party animal, and fancy to get drink in foreign countries rather than sightseeing, then the tour manager who named Emmo and Contiki would be the best choice for you ever.

To conclude, just be considering who you are and what you like, before you decided to spend your penny.

I’m sorry you had a bad experience. I think that it is the tour manager as well as the people that make the tour good or bad.

Your contiki experience sounds like it was the opposite of mine. I did a tour where the TM was very helpful, the people had a great time together and it wasn’t all about drinking it was a mixture of sightseeing and partying. I actually had such a good time I am thinking of planning another one.

    Hi Explorer!

It is a shame that you didn’t enjoy you’re tour but I, like Kelsey, had an amazing time on mine! I thought I might try and address a couple of things..

I think the TM did the right thing cancelling Mt Pilatus, we still went up even though it was foggy and to be honest it was a waste of time, you couldn’t see two feet in front of you so you didn’t miss much there..

Now they can’t have been partying and drinking during the day! That is when the majority of sightseeing takes place no?

The bus has to be kept cool otherwise could you imagine being on the bus all day with 45 other people breathing in and out with the bus at room temperature
It’d get uncomfortable pretty quick and it’s the perfect temperature for viruses and what not to manifest..soo the cold is for your own good Razzer<!--graemlin::p-->

As for night time activites, unless you buy an optional dinner or dinner is included, the night is up to you. The majority of the group usually wants to go out after dinner anyway so of course the TM is going to organise something..I’m sure if the majority wanted to go to a show or something they’d organise that too..

Anywho I guess every tour is what you make of it so I wouldn’t focus on the bad parts of your trip but remember the good times! There had to be a few at least!

Then you are lucky and also happy for you that you enjoyed the tour.
However, the bus should turn the A/C on for fresh air for sure, but not to turn it onto very low temperature. If you were there, and surffing the cold during the journey, I am sure you would have another opinions.

For the drinking, yes. As I said, people have right to party, but they have made noise on hallway nearly every nights to disturb people’s sleeping, unfortunately they are all Aussies. What a shame!

About Mt Pilatus, well, maybe what you said is true, but did you definitely experience it, even in the foggy weather? Also, The tour manager should ask everyone’s willing, before making stupid decision.

However, I just found the tour sucks as people are from a place don’t know what “RESPECT” called for. Otherwise, the tour would be nice for sure.

All i can say don’t judge the whole company on one tour!!! I’ve been on three tours all with different experiences and they are all different because of the tour manager and bus driver, and the group of people your on that bus with! I have done the European Inspiration tour in Feb 2011 and I can honestly say that I HAD THE TIME OF MY LIFE!!! As for all the Partying Drunks that you had on your tour…Why would you let them get in the way of your fun?!?! You paid all that money so you could experience Europe in all its glory. Why is Contiki to blame for you letting them get you down??? It does sound like your Tour Manager didn’t go that extra mile, but geeze!!! A contiki Tour is what you make of it and your making it sound awful when its just not!!! We learnt a saying on our contiki which is learnt on all tours i beleive…Its not Bad its just Different!!!!

Oh and they have to keep the inside of the bus reasonably cool other wise the windows fog up and the bus driver cant see!!!! and you wont be able to see europe go past!!!

Unfortunately every now a then someone does have a bad trip with Contiki. The good thing is about 95% of people have a great time. Sorry you were part of that 5%. I’m just hoping I have a responsible TM. I’m not against the TM having a good time, but I hope he realizes he has a job to do

As for your experience with not getting a seat a dinner, I don’t think the TM deserves a bad tip for not helping you immediately. The way you described it made it seem like they sat down to eat with everyone else. You have to remember the being a TM is a 24/7 job. They have to constantly organize a huge group of people getting around Europe. They are people to, and need to eat. And they are also not your mom/dad. It is not there responsibility to hold everyone’s hand and make sure the sit down for dinner. If you had asked for help and they were rude, I can understand your frustration but the story seems like they weren’t being overly neglectful. If that’s really the worst your TM did, it sounds like you had acceptable service.

Sophc, I agree with everything you said!!

I think it comes down to what your expectations are Explorer1206739. I mean seriously, havent you heard of the reputation of contiki having heaps of partying???

I am going to do the 45 day ultimate european in 2011 and ill be 33, so I am under no illusions whatsoever about my body being punished and also the fact that most if not all of the people on there will be younger than me, hence sleep wont be something I will get much of for 6 weeks.

I think you basically you need to have the attitude sophc has ie. your going to get what you want out of your tour no matter what!!

i do kinda get what your saying about aussies, im one and we can be pretty rude and disrespectful, but not all of us are like that!!

ps you can sleep when your dead lol

Ok so just a few things; its awful that you didnt enjoy your tour. In most cases it is the majority rules. Contiki is a very fast paced tour designed for young travellers, therefore a lot of partying. The air conditioner on the bus is used even in colder whether to keep the germs at bay, germs and bacteria thrive in warmer conditions, could you imagine how much sicker you would have been with germs baking in your bus?
Contiki tour guide is there for your information and organisation – they are not babysitters nor are they at your service like a butler. You are an adult and are able to seat yourself. The Contiki guide has had just as big of a day as you have.
It is a shame that you didnt enjoy your Contiki. I am leaving for Euro Highlights in June 2011 and cant wait! I fully understand that I will be having cabins for sleeping and even if the food is bland as iv read before, Im not there to eat I am there to experience a different culture and seriously if I can see as much of Europe as I can for $2000AUD i dont care if I have to eat dirt or sleep on nails. Cut the Contiki crew some slack hey.

Not only was it the WORST TOUR I ever been on Contiki was the WORST COMPANY I ever dealt with. I agree most of the Contiki customers are there to drink and dont care to see Europe and dont respect others or let you sleep.I thought my Contiki tour would be a great gift to myself for graduation, it turns out if you hold a Bachelors Degree you are a Sheldon Cooper in comparison to the idiots who go on Contiki. I do my best to warn people not to do a Contiki

CameraON… You say most customers are there to drink, not see Europe and don’t respect others… You think you can judge every Contiki customer based on your own bad experience? It’s a shame you didn’t enjoy yourself but to say something extreme like that is just plain naive in my opinion. I am going on two contiki tours, and I plan on doing a good amount of drinking, seeing all of Europe that is on offer and I will especially really enjoy meeting everyone else doing the same tours as me and making some life-long friends.

Fair enough that you wanted to let others know of your bad experience – and that is what these sections on the forums are for, but unless you know “most of the contiki customers” personally, you shouldn’t go around making absurd claims.

By the sounds of you last few posts you dont deserve a bachelors degree and comparing yourself to sheldon is about right because you know what people like that dont hav the social skills us “idiots” hav so SO-rry but you just seem like you tried to act all high and mighty because you went to university. as said above unless you know “most of the contiki customersa” dont judge us coz we had a great trip and dont want to hear you bagging us out. sure let people know you had a bad time but you dont hav to name call and be rude.
And i dont know about you but on my contiki they let us sleep. they certainly didnt come around waking us up as soon as we fell asleep. and for the respect part my TM always told us to respect every1 else coz we werent the only people in the campsite and people are sleeping. and you know what no one ever complained about being woken up by roudy party go-ers. sorry you haad a bad trip but dont push ur negitivity onto everyone else.
As for the first post about Aussies. really you’re going to judge a who country on just one bunch of aussies on your tour.
Also our TM told us to tell him anytime we thought the bus was too cold and they would turn it down a bit but we always came prepared like wore long pants for the days on the bus or carried jumpers to put over us while sleeping. so these things can be fixed.

Totally agree with you girl!! If you go in with that attitude you aren’t just going to ruin it for yourself, but everyone else to!! No-one likes a buzzkill!

And FYI: Where I’m from the uni students are the ones notoriously known as the party animals and heavy drinkers! I can imagine lots of uni students here just LOVING a contiki tour! I myself am not a big drinker and am interested in sightseeing and not the most social person.. but iv’e specifically chosen Contiki because there will be plenty of socialites on it who will be a right laugh and get me out of my shell!

    - and also it seems like any person can get a degree these days so I wouldn’t put yourself on a pedestal just for that!

I returned recently from a European Discovery (Winter) tour and overall had a good time and was glad I went. It was my first Contiki tour and I’m generally not a fan of long escorted tours.

I hardly drink and am not into the partying and drinking at night that many/most on the tour were into. I just didn’t join them as they tended to be either optionals or a bunch of folks went on their own. I didn’t party through the night as I didn’t want to get too little sleep and get sick. (I didn’t get sick until the day the group dispersed.)

My TM, Ben, was very respectful to me and I think everyone else on the tour. He also made it clear to us to not disturb others by have parties in our rooms (instead go to the bar) and the consequences could be the police coming and being fined. I’d imagine that Contiki groups wouldn’t be welcome back at hotels if there were too many noise complaints.

Our bus was never too cold w/AC blaring.

Yeah, unfortunately, I’m sure on every trip, there are too many random elements from the TM to the conditions to the those on the group itself.

FWIW, I tipped both our TM and driver slightly above the suggested amount per day. Maybe I should’ve given them more as they both did a great job, IMHO.

I, too, just returned from my first Contiki, which was another European Discovery tour. I’m sorry that you had such a bad experience, but as everybody else has stated, the tour is exactly what YOU make of it!

On my tour, half of the people would go out to party and drink, but the others would come back and chill at the hotel or go to bed.

Also, my TM, Dom, was very fun and upbeat, but also very organized. He would make us information sheets about the sights and restaurants that we should go see, and after talking to us about it, he would go up and down the coach to check to see if we were okay and had any questions. But you have to give them some slack! The TM’s have a very demanding job and they deserve some fun as well!

I had a FANTASTIC experience on my Contiki, and I plan on booking my next tour to England and Scotland this summer! Bravo Contiki!!

Back to my European Discovery (Winter) tour w/TM Ben. For most cities, our TM passed out a city map would go over the sights, pickup/drop off points (if appropriate), schedule, etc. Afterward, he’d also go up and down the coach to make sure everyone understood and was ok. This was esp. needed for some folks on our bus where their native language wasn’t English.

It seemed to be standard operating practice (for both my group and the other bus) where the TM would write up a sheet and post it at the hotel w/important info like our schedule for the remainder of the day, breakfast, bags on the coach and departure times.

Okay i am rather nervous now i must admit. I am not a party animal and i love to sleep. However i do love watching other people get drunk and making total asses of themselves. I think i will still have a good time even with all the negative comments that i have read in the last hour. A holiday is after all what you make of it. If you set yourself above everyone else then of course you are going to have a bad time.

i had emmo on my new zealand contiki…whilst most of us were aussies and liked to party and have a drink we did have people on tour that preferred to have a quiet night in. emmo accommodated for everyone and everyone was happy with the tour.
contiki does have the reputation as a party bus but that is what u get urself into. i got another tour booked for next year and seriously i hope it is as wild as the one i was on in new zealand.

Sorry that your tour wasnt the best, or what you expected.

I came back from my tour recently and it was pure amazing. You need to realize the tour manager has to look after (xx amount of people, we had 51 in our grp) so its hard for them to figure what everyone wants without you asking.

You also need to make the tour what you want. If you go on one and are miserable, your tour is going to suck. It isnt a “Holiday” or “Vacation”, its a tour you pay for, and its what you get. Yes people go to drink and party, but not everyone.

You can always email Contiki directly with your concerns and discuss your concerns with them. They may be able to assist better.
