Is Riverboarding still an Optional extra?
5 Dec 2009 Mark asked
Have noticed that the riverboarding has been taking off the list of optional extras in Queenstown, does anyone know if it still is an optional extra or has Contiki got rid of it. If they have got rid of it, can we still do it ourselves, it looks awesome fun.
Cheers,
Mark.

Interesting … i do not see it on the optionals list. In any case, you have quite a lot of time in Queesntown to do plenty of optionals and you can definitely do Mad Dog Riveroarding on your own. Pretty insane ride.

Mad Dog riverboarding was taken off the optional list because a girl died doing it last year.
Your tour manager can still book it for you though if you want to do it

As with all adventure activities, there is an element of risk involved. It helps a little if you can kick with the mini flippers that are provided, but the waters are miserably ice cold down to the bone. Listen to your guide, and prepare your path early because it’s absolutely futile to fight the current.
Kinda analogous to a meteor heading towards earth – easier and more effective to give it a little nudge when it’s months away. However when it’s only days away,we could tickle it with all our nukes and have little to no effect.

The tour manager won’t book it for you because that could get them in trouble. They’ll just give you the info if you want to do it on your own.
