2009 Oktoberfest dates:
Sep. 19th – Oct. 4th
About Oktoberfest:
Oktoberfest is an annual fall festival which takes place in Munich, Germany. It is associated with the consumption of large amounts of beer and traditional German foods, along with general merrymaking. With a few exceptions due to wars, Germans have celebrated Oktoberfest every year since 1810, although the early version of the event was dramatically different than the modern incarnation. Many communities with a large German population host their own versions of Oktoberfest every year, encouraging people to celebrate German heritage and join together in fellowship.
One of the most distinctive features of Oktoberfest is a dark, rich beer called Maß, which is traditionally served in quarter gallon (one liter) tankards. The price of this beer is often a topic of discussion among aficionados of the event; it can be an indicator of general economic health, and price hikes are of course always a subject for complaint. The event opens with the Mayor of Munich ceremonially tapping a keg of Maß, and it lasts for 16 days. During Oktoberfest, huge crowds descend upon Munich, making it the largest fair in the world.
The first Oktoberfest was actually a horse race, held to celebrate the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig I and his wife Therese Saxe-Hildburghausen. The race was such a success that the Germans decided to repeat the event, adding a fair as well, and slowly but steadily, beer entered the mix, eventually becoming the major feature of Oktoberfest. The horse races were dropped in the middle of the 20th century, but it is still possible to purchase a wide range of crafts at the fair, when it happens at the same time as Oktoberfest.- 0 people like this

Ok, don’t take this as gospel but I’ve been told a few things about Oktoberfest during Contiki tours.
First of all, double check that your tour is GOING to Oktoberfest, it may say on the brochure that this tour is on during Oktoberfest, but unless it states you GO; your tour doesn’t actually go there. You go to the Bavarian Beerhall or something.
I’ve also been told off people that unless you have a tent/seat or something at Oktoberfest, it’s damn near impossible to get a drink.
Just a few things for people to check out if they are really interested in Oktoberfest.- 0 people like this

hey make sure that your tour is actually going to octoberfest, so you don’t get all your hope ups… its totallly fun. I was there last year with my tour, and its crazy. theres rides and food and totally like and amusment park with beer tents. theres lots to choose from and it nearlty imposible to fine a table at night night so pick only a few people to go with and find a table. you do need to be at a table to be served but just look around and if you find one don’t leave…. its crazy but totally fun… just don’t go to crazy theres lots of creepers out there lol lol hope that helps have fun, and have a beer for me!

Oktoberfest is amazing! Such an excellent party atmosphere. I haven’t been with Contiki before, but I have been there.
Stacey is right though, if you go into a beer hall and don’t have a seat you wont be allowed to drink. Most seats get booked pretty early, so if you were wanting to go, check to see what your tour does, that way you can make your own plans and book seats if your tour doesnt actually take you there.
