Definitely go! I did the March 9-18 tour this year, and it was the best two weeks of my life!

If you decide, I recommend arriving a day or two before to get adjusted to the culture shock and get over the jetlag. I went to the pyramids the day before, and was glad I did because we didn’t spend nearly enough time there that I would have wanted with the tour. Plus the day before the tour it was all clear skies with gave me some amazing shots — the next day there was a dust storm.

Also, bring some liquor with you and store it in your luggage, it’ll come in handy.

It was the best of the 4 Contiki tours I’ve taken. I think it was the tour mates…

Do you have any specific questions?

    Any nightlife in Egypt?

Was in Greece and did the Greek Island /hoping with a bunch of crazy Auzies… it was awesome.

The cruise ship and hotels you stayed at all had a bar/western music. We took over the music played on the ship, so if you have an ipod with connections bring it. You really won’t run into other westerners aside from the hotel in Cairo, so the nightlife is dependent on your tour mates. Luxor is the only place where there is a night club outside of the hotel (there is an Irish pub down the block with a dance club in the basement.)

    Hi,

I am 18 years of age. I am thinking of doing the Egypt and the Nile tour. Any one know if there would be too much of an age gap between 18 and the range age?

    Cheers

The average age of my tour was in their mid 20’s, but there were a few 18 yo’s. I wouldn’t let your age discourage you, it won’t matter.

Cheers for your advice Ed. Looks like I will go through with Egypt and the Nile contiki tour on the 15th of November.

    Hey Ed,

Thanks for that info. I’m planning on doing the same, getting into Cairo the night before then heading the pyramids first thing in the morning. Just a quick question—did you go to the pyramids on your own or with a sightseeing company? If so, would you recommend it? How far is the hotel from the pyramids?

    Cheers,

    Alex

The hotel has private drivers that you can rent for the day, and I used that. I overall wasn’t impressed with the experience. I felt like I was ripped off (you have to pay for gas, which he randomly states, you have to tip, and then you have to go in and pay the company more). You also have to tell him exactly your destination and not let him talk you into anything else (he kept pushing me to take a camel ride, and when I asked him to take me to a nice restaurant he took me to a place that sucked that he probably got a cut for). It was a bit intimidating since it’s your first day and I wasn’t sure of the customs, or what really was going on.

Although it probably was only about $50 US for about 5,6 hours in the car, and convenient. He drops you off, you tell him to be back in 3 hours, and he’s there.

I’d skip any company, you’ll get an overview by contiki, and I liked being able to explore on my own lost in my own thoughts.

Praha had posted here and in an attempt to reply to it I accidentally deleted it, my apologies.

Praha’s post recommended being careful about scams with taxi’s and the guys selling stuff there – set a price before going in a taxi, be prepared to negotiate. Praha also recommended taking a camel ride at the pyramids.
