You need to pay to get into the Sistine Chapel, Vatican Museum, the Garden, & the Dome, but the Basilica is free. There are also quite a few free tours of the Basilica as well.

The city state of the Vatican is free. To get into the museums ect you have to pay. I highly suggest booking your own tour. If you can get there early enough the line isn’t so bad when I went the line was over a mile (kid you not) long. I had a tour and walked right past everyone.
<!--graemlin::)--> I suggest booking with the vatican themselves go to the Vatican website. There is tons of info including a virtual tour of the museum.
You can also book with groups like Angel Tours there are many others as well. But I’d book with Angel tours or the vatican Directly. Skip the garden tour of the vatican its a waist of time. Get yourself a Rick Steves Rome book or go look at one at the book store if you are there more than 2 days its worth it.- 0 people like this

Book in advance. They often sell out. Have an altrnate date in mind if possible. Some tour “scalpers” as I call them stand around the lines and offer tours but only if they can get 10 or more people and they might not be able to get that many. That person might not know crap about whats in there either.

I did the Med. Highlights tour and it wasn’t an included excursion.
My mates and I didn’t set up a tour and waited in line to get into the Vatican. It was about a 1/2 hr wait. I don’t remember how much it was, but 15 euro sounds about right. The Vatican Museum is pretty overwhelming and it is very crowded. We got a little tired of all the artwork and ended up just walking through not stopping at anything really, until we got to the Sistine Chapel.- 0 people like this

I just found out my 8:30 tour could not get confirmed through Select Italy. I signed up for it when the opening time for the Vatican was 10:30, figuring I could get in and out earlier. Now I see the opening time for the Sistine Chapel is back to 8:30. If I get there at 7:30 would I be set for beating most of the line? The Vatican website says their own tours March-October don’t start til 10:30, so it looks like i’ll be doing it on my own. I don’t mind waiting, I just hope it wont be that much now that my original plans were shot down (I’ll be there May 20th).
They did give me the option of booking a 2pm, but I think I’d rather do the Vatican in the morning then Colosseum in the afternoon.- 0 people like this
