Hi,
My friend and I have booked into the HI Santa Monica hostel for July 2009 before our WW tour. I could only get a 10 bed dorm- having not hostelled before- Is a larger dorm better or worse? Safer? Or not?

Any advice on dorm sizes and what to expect from larger ones would be great
Cheers

Ewwww, I’m not a dorm fan at all so I’m probably really biased in a bad way! I don’t think I’d like to sleep with nine other random people snoring, gurgling and doing goodness knows what else in their sleep!

Safer or not probably doesn’t factor as you will most likely keep your luggage in the hostel lockers. I don’t think many dorms have space for luggage from what I have heard.

Also, I would sleep with your passport/money/credit cards strapped to your body or in your pillow case or something. I definitely wouldn’t leave things like that in my luggage.

Hey perthbeachgirl – iv’e been looking at HI Santa Monica hostel to stay at for a few days also in July sometime! What dates have you booked? I’m heaps apprehensive of the whole hostel thing because of safety issues etc. but coz I’m a solo traveller its kind of the cheapest option… Were the other rooms booked out already- is that why you had to get a 10bed dorm? Might see you there!

    Hi,

I’m staying in the HI Santa Monica on the 19th July for 3 nights on my own but managed to get a 4bedded girls only room? Or thought I had?

Hey Frances, I might just be around there at that time too! Where are you from? Im a bit worried though because I may not be booking till I’m over there in June because my plans may well be up in the air till then. Might just see you there too! Did They have twin share rooms?

    Hey Rhianna,

I’m from Yorkshire in England. A delightful part of he world! They had all kinds of rooms when I booked but looks to me like they’ve changed the website recently coz I can’t find all the info I had on there any more. Just had confirmation from them though that I definately have booked a bed in a girls only dorm with en-suite. I know the downsides to staying in hostels being security etc. but I spent ages thinking about it (being a solo traveller) I’d much rather be somewhere where there are lots of people to meet and have to be a bit more safety conscious than stuck in a hotel room on my own for a week!

    He Frances,

Yeah thats fair enough, im just starting to understand the distances between everything in the LA area, so I reckon im gonna stay in santa monica for a few days and then head to hollywood or something. Thats good you have your confirmation, now you can move onto the next phase of planning!

I stayed at a hostel in Hollywood for a few nights…it was okkkk, but I hate not having the privacy of a motel room.

Jump on to expedia.com a few weeks before you arrive and you will almost always find a motel room of decent quality for almost the same price as a hostel.

Hostels are full of weird dirty hippies and they’re not the most secure place for your valuables. Definately hit up a motel if you get the chance!!
