How to call collect from Europe
29 Jun 2008 PhantomPlanet said
Also, if I want to call home from Europe and my number is, for example, 416-555-2345 would the number look like: 00-1-416-555-2345
How much does it cost to call from London to Canada from a payphone? (If I don't get a calling card, just a straight call and are there any other extra numbers that I need to dial besides the 00 and 1?)
Thanks!

I wouldn’t do it without a calling card. Payphones will charge an arm and leg as will hotels.
Just buy a calling card as you go and use that, it will be much cheaper and they’re very easy to use (just check with the hotel that they don’t charge you a fee for using the hotel phone, even if it’s a free call some will charge you for it).- 0 people like this

Question – Is it better to buy a calling card from Canada before I leave for my trip, or should I wait and buy one in London???

Your best bet, IMHO, is to buy a Canadian Calling Card. Check to make sure they have international access from where you are traveling.
You’ll pay Canadian Rates (which in the NADP is much cheaper) and you’ll know you have some time to call Mom & Dad or your special someone. Its amazing how much those little things make a trip.- 0 people like this

check with your mobile phone operator if they have a deal with some companies in europe to get cheaper calls to/from canada.
you might get cheaper rates if you use your own canadian phone. instead of calling, send text messages. :-)
depending on where your traveling but at least in northern europe (especially finland), it’s harder and harder to find phones that are operated by coins. most people have mobile phones over here…
don’t use your credit card for calling home. it’s extremely expensive. you never know the prices beforehand. :-(- 0 people like this

Ya, I did that when I was in Las Vegas a couple months ago…Used my credit card and when I got home I realized it cost me $30 for a 5 minute phone call from Vegas to Toronto! I can’t imagine what it would be from London to Toronto! haha..
I think I’ll pick up a phone card before we go then! Thanks for the advice!

Not sure how to call collect but you could call at about 1.5c/min using a calling card.

You could always “reverse charges” and let your family/friends pay for the privilege of hearing your voice :-)
