  I wouldn’t do it without a calling card. Payphones will charge an arm and leg as will hotels.
  
  Just buy a calling card as you go and use that, it will be much cheaper and they’re very easy to use (just check with the hotel that they don’t charge you a fee for using the hotel phone, even if it’s a free call some will charge you for it).

  Your best bet, IMHO, is to buy a Canadian Calling Card. Check to make sure they have international access from where you are traveling.
  
  You’ll pay Canadian Rates (which in the NADP is much cheaper) and you’ll know you have some time to call Mom & Dad or your special someone. Its amazing how much those little things make a trip.

  Ya, I did that when I was in Las Vegas a couple months ago…Used my credit card and when I got home I realized it cost me $30 for a 5 minute phone call from Vegas to Toronto! I can’t imagine what it would be from London to Toronto! haha..
