Just read a bad 'best of usa' review, please say it isn't so...

I just read a post on the North American advice forum that absolutely bags out the best of the USA tour. (see North American Advice, 'Best of USA itinerary change'). Explorer 1150736 makes it sound like the trip from hell! Everything else I have read/heard about Contiki has been extremely positive.
Is this stuff true, or does explorer just have really high standards or is difficult to please?
Explorer rants on about how if you didn't do the optionals your left to your own devices - but isn;t that like on of the best things about the best of the usa tour - we are in cities for a number of days so we do have the opportunity to explore/see whatever we want, and anyway most of the optionals sound like essentials...
Also, explorer says that the LA-Hollywood day one bit of the tour was really short and that most of the day was spent at the hotel (eg. 40 minutes at Venice beach...) is this true, but there again, if so, couldn't we just make our own way back to hotel and spend more time in Hollywood?)
To anyone eho has done the best of the USA or Contiki staff, i would really appreciate your point of view!!
