Hello, guys and dolls. is anyone going on the London and Paris trip Oct 18-25? I am so excited. It is my first trip abroad and I'd love to make some connections and get tips prior to departure. Thanks!

Regular or extended version of the trip? I’ll be on the extended trip from Oct 18-26!

I think regular? No Paris extension….unfortunately. Do you start out in London?

  • 31 Jul 2014 Janae said

    Janae

Yes I do. I wonder if they combine the regular and the extension on the same bus? We’ll find out soon!

Maybe so! So you get just one day extra in Paris? I considered doing an extra day in Paris. This is my first trip abroad/to Europe. What about you? Where are you from?

Actually, I just remembered my friend has been on like 5 Contiki’s and she told me that lots of tours start together (out of London) and may do Paris, too, and then continue on to whatever other country they have planned. I am so excited!

It’s an extra 2 nights in Paris but it’s on your own versus being with the tour. I’m hoping I’ll have some tour mates to explore the city with for those 2 days. This will be my second trip with Contiki. I went 8 years ago on Winter Wanderer (28 days) and had such an amazing time! I have wanted to return to both London and Paris so this tour seemed perfect to explore the cities a lot more. I’m from California, what about you?

I just have a feeling I’m going to love Paris! I thought hard and was so tempted to stay an extra day in Paris but since I haven’t traveled before, i felt overwhelmed booking hotels on my own. Especially after two people freaked me out about being there alone. Lol! Maybe I can check into it again. I already have my flight booked and I think there is a fee to amend the flight but we can see. I’m in Atlanta, Georgia. California is def on my list of places to see! What part are you in?

I fell in love with Paris, it is a beautiful city! I know with the extension trip the hotel is included for the extra 2 nights, the days are just unescorted so transportation to the airport is on your own, although I’m not too worried about that. But I definitely think you should give Contiki a phone call and see what it would be to add the extension…I may be a little biased in wanting you to join me for the extra days lol. I’m from Southern California, Orange County to be more specific. I might be one of the few people in this state that prefers the fall and winter months, love the rain! Can’t believe we are just over 2 months away from our trip!!

I can’t wait to meet y’all in 70 days! I feel so unprepared. I need clothes. LOL! Janae, do you have any tips for us? I def will check into the extension. What are you looking forward to most? Are either of you on FB? Fall is my favorite time of year. However, I would like to experience Cali’s sunshine and no humidity.

This website is weird. My comments pretend to post and then don’t. Hopefully you arent getting duplicates. I was just asking if either of you are on FB. And do you have any tips for packing, etc Janae? I can’t believe our trip is in 69 days! Freaking! I feel unprepared. LOL! I cannot wait to meet y’all!! Sunny Cali sounds great to me. No humidity. In GA it is so muggy. However, i like fall best. I am super hot natured so I like cool temps and changing of the leaves.

I haven’t seen any duplicate posts. I am on FB: Janae Moss (picture is from the color run). My first trip was in winter and was 28 days so it will be a little different this time, but this is what I learned. Pack light, I know everyone says this and it’s true. Leave room for souvenirs so you don’t find yourself having to buy a second bag and pay more money to travel back. I’m only doing a carry on for this trip. Layers will be your friend. Have a good set of walking shoes, you walk…a lot. If it’s in your budget, splurge!! While I won’t do the Moulin Rouge again due to the price it’s a must for a first time and you will regret not doing it. I travelled alone my first trip and will most likely be alone this trip, it’s not a big deal. I switched groups quite often depending on what people wanted to do. I love talking with people before the trip because you can kind of plan things you want to do. There is so much to see, it’s a good idea to know your must sees. Take a million pictures, I took over 1,000 last time and wished I had more lol. Honestly, we are all going to have the time of our lives. Don’t sweat the small stuff, I had hoped for snow on my last trip and ended up getting no snow and rain every other day but it still was an amazing trip. I think I could go on and on about things to do or not do, any specific questions? And if you ever make it down to Southern California you will have a tour guide :)

Ok, so. How much walking? Like, is this the type of situation where I need to wear tennis and totally look like a tourist, or Tom’s or something? Also, how the heck are you going to only take a carry on for 9 days?? What do you plan on wearing? Do we just wear causal/athletic gear or jeans and tops and then do we also need “outfits” for going out? I don’t know Contiki’s style. Is there time in between outings to go back to the hotel and freshen up? I am so excited that we are taking before the trip so at lease we have a bud in each other. I am def independent and like my alone time, but something so exciting like this, it is better shared. So I will probably feel out the groups, too. Is there a lot of time to do our own thing. I want to do random things like find cool thrift stores in Paris, or tiny cafes, or live music. I also found this thing on Pinterest that has GPS coordinates to hidden/off the beaten path places to take photos. I obvi wanna see the Louvre and Eiffel Tower but I hear the lines for the Louvre are insane and I don’t want to waste 4 hrs in a day…..but then again I don’t want to pass it up either. I have felt torn about Moulin Rouge bc I hear it is so expensive and there is a cheaper version next door. I just want to sit in a Pub in London and drink craft beers and laugh. I think the pre-tour day that I am in London I will visit Tate Modern or MOT. Someone who lived in Paris told me to check out the area near Opera and also another sector that I can’t remember right now but he said there are lots of good restaurants there. I want to say it is the Latin Quarter?

How much is enough spending cash? I want to bring home little trinkets, wine, toffee, nothing major. Oh and anything I find cool like street art that can be rolled up, or thrift finds.

Some days I would be walking from 9 in the morning until 7 at night, so depending on how many stops at places and how often we took the metro I imagine we did anywhere from 3 miles to 7 miles if we walked the whole time. I wore a comfy pair of boots. I plan on bringing tennis shoes and a pair of flats. As for the carry on, I’m only bringing 2 pairs of jeans and 1 pair of black leggings with just enough tops to last the trip. I’ll throw in 2 nicer tops and a cardigan to be safe and probably a dress. After having to pack 1 suitcase for 28 days and keep it under the weight limit, this seems like a piece of cake! If you plan on hitting the clubs then you will need some going out clothes (some of my tour mates bought clothes during the trip), but I tend to value my sleep so I can take advantage of a very full day packed with whatever I want to do. I didn’t go back to the hotel most of my days, but you definitely can. Again, I wanted to squeeze in every little thing so I didn’t want to spend 1 less hour to go back to the hotel. This trip should have a good amount of time on our own. They usually do a night driving/walking tour and then for Paris the first morning do the Eiffel Tower and let you on your own. I still have my map from my last trip and will be planning out things I want to do. I only plan on doing Stonehenge and Versailles but will skip the perfumery (not worth it last time). As for the Louvre, it was something I missed last time, we got to it and had to leave due to seeing the Moulin Rouge. I am looking into pre-purchasing a ticket on one of the free days but will give myself a time limit. It’s one of the main reasons I did the extended trip, as I knew I would want to spend a couple hours of there. There is a specific section that is supposed to be amazing. As for the cabaret show, the one next to the Moulin Rouge is cheaper for a reason, those who went did not have a lot of positive things to say. Hard to compare as I did the Moulin Rouge and loved it! What time are you arriving in London? My flight comes in at 7 or 8am and last time I was able to check into my hotel early and explore the city. I ended up getting lost on my first day, but found my way to do a quick sight seeing from a bus. Can’t wait to actually visit the sights this time lol. Unless you plan on going crazy with alcohol or buying a whole new wardrobe $1,000 should be plenty.

We value our sleep because we are old, Janae. LOL!! JK. I am with you. I definitely want to spend my time all day every day seeing things. A friend of a friend told me to go to the underground area near the Louvre, a place most tourist don’t know about, to get tickets and skip the line. I do realize I made that sound so much more sketch than he did. I am interested in both Stonehedge and Versailles, as well as Bath. I also hope they offer the bike tour in Pairs. I considered the perfumery but I am sure it’s time consuming and I could probably find perfumes somewhere else. I arrive in London the day before the tour starts, actually. And I believe check in is at 2;00 pm and then we meet the group at 6:00 pm. So, maybe we could arrange a first meeting and exploring. I have no idea where I am staying the first night or what I am doing yet. I guess I didn’t know how much pre-planning I should do on my own or if I can make decisions once on the tour. I think I was under the assumption that the itinerary would be slammed for me…..
Your packing sounds ideal. I am going to aim for carry on with fewer clothing items bc I can always wash stuff at the hotel if I need to (like in the sink or something?).

3-7 miles isn’t too bad. I was thinking it would be like 10 or 20.

For London there are two main hotels they use. Once we get our packets from them we’ll know which hotel. We should definitely meet up! We went to the underground section for the Louvre, it was a pretty long line too, although it was New Years Eve so I’m pretty sure it won’t be as crowded. I think it’s a good idea to have some ideas of what you want to do, but to be flexible. I used the sink last time to wash shirts and socks and then hung everything in the shower. I also brought Febreeze since it was such a long trip. Walking never felt that bad, I’m sure some days I walked 10+ miles, but my feet and muscles were never sore. Maybe it was the excitement of it all!
