I found a trip that i absolutely LOVE but i was planning on doing a superior(concept tour) the tour is London to Rome and they only offer it in budget(timeout) i would really love some feedback on the difference or if anyone has done this tour? Im not too worried about the "fun" factor i know ill have a blast no matter what but im more interested in how far the accomidations are from the city? I read somewhere that you have to help out with cooking and cleaning? soooo many questions LOL any help is appriciated Big Grin

Hi, I think you’ve got it the wrong way around, Concept tours are the budget ones, Time Out are the hotel tours. From what I’ve heard, on Concept tours you all take turns in the kitchen with cooking and cleaning. I’m going on one in March so I would also like to know how far away the camps are from the cities but I think the coach can drop you into town…

I heard you help out with cooking etc on camping tours but I didn’t think you had to on concept unless you want to..??
Anyways, If you are that worried about it you could consider a similar tour that is a timeout/superior tour… e.g Road to Rome is quite similar and is timeout.. it does go to a few different places in the middle though.

with cooking and cleaning, with so many people on tour, you would only have to do it once – if your time ever came around, maybe the tour wouldnt be long enough. but who cares anyone, its one time – right?!

i went on time out last year and its just hotels rather than hostels. youll have the same amount of fun no matter what so not a big deal, plus how much time will you really spend sleeping anyway.

for my tour our driver dropped us off in town as often as he could so you would only have to pay fair one way, but you can split it between your friends every time!

I did a concept tour last year and the cooking and cleaning thing is very very minimal. You only have to volunteer to do one or the either at one of the campsites along the way, and all you really do is help the Contiki reps (who are based on site). Cookies usually help serve dinner/breakfast. and Dishies usually just clear dishes from the tables and take them to the kitchen. I was assigned as a Cookie on the Rome site and the Reps actually didn’t need our help so we actually got out of it :P

As for accommodation yeah, you can usually plan to get a lift INTO town to go to the night life and sometimes if you want to leave at the same time as the driver you’ll get a lift back. Your tour manager will advise you on how much you should spend on a taxi. 25-35 Euro is pretty standard. Rome & Paris sites are not walking or public transport distance away from the city. You’ll need a taxi, but between 4 people it’s cheap.
If you can’t handle cabins or backpacker accommodation then maybe concept is not for you. However you spend such little time in your accommodation, the money you save could go on better things ;P Plus Europe is all about the Backpacker! It’s the way to go :D You will remember the fun times, not how easy it was to get back to base.
