Style and What to Wear in Italy (Summer)?

Hey everyone! :)
I'm going on the Italian Espresso tour this summer and I have a question for what clothes I'm going to bring with me. While I know that I'll try and dress comfortably, I would like not to stick out too much as a tourist when not with the optional tours or the rest of the group. I heard that pickpockets usually try to target obvious tourists and in a sea of people, I'd like to look a little less out of place.
Also, I heard that Italians appreciate it when people dress well, so yeah... I'm not a dress person, but since I'm heading there in the summer, I think I'm going to bring one. I know that it would be of a longer length, since I want to enter the churches with no problem.
So I'd like to know if any of you have suggestions for the types of:
- Hats
- Skirts
- Shirts
In the summer time?
Other than that, I just wear black pants that I'm really comfortable in, but they do get a bit hot in the summer.
