Swiping travellex cards instead of chip

I've just got a uk and europe travelex card and haven't been able to use it in the UK shops as it doesn't have a chip. It seems to work on most atms but when it comes to using it in a shop almost half of the eftpos machines can only read a chip card. Has anyone else had this problem? and will I have the same problem with them in europe? Thankyou :)
