The Expedition - Has anyone done it?

Hi! I have never been on a Contiki or even travelled before. I live in New Zealand. I really like the look of The Expedition. Has anyone done it? I get I'd need to buy a sleeping bag and things so would I need a super good warm down one for the July-August season? And also, I would take a big travel backpack right? Not a ridiculously huge suitcase?
