American - Canadian Currency - Possibly a silly question

Hi All

This may seem like a silly question but I was just curious. I am doing the Grand Northern Tour next year which has a few days in Canada. I was wondering where we can change American currency to Canadian currency? I am assuming I will need to change some over for the days I am in Canada

Thanks
Tazzie

There are lots of places to change your currency in Canada/America. The Canadian dollar is par to the American dollar right now (and will probably stay that way for a while), so you shouldn’t worry too much about losing money when you exchange. Shopping malls more often than not have a place to change currency, especially if the mall is close to the border. Ask your Tour Manager about the best places to exchange, they will probably have better advice than I do.

Any Canadian bank will exchange your money, you will not be able to use American money at all just for a heads up. You will need to pay a fee though as you will not have an account at the bank. Usually its about 10.00. It may be easier to use a debit card instead, thats what I would do.

As others said, it shouldn’t be too hard. A more direct option is to withdraw Canadian currency directly from a Canadian ATM, and keep your US dollars for when you return to the US after visiting Canada, as I think all the Contiki tours do. And I disagree that you can’t use US money in certain border areas of Canada — at Niagara Falls, for example, most businesses take either one. Not the case in Toronto and certainly not in Quebec though. I’d go the ATM route, but check with your bank before leaving home to make sure you can withdraw money overseas and what the fee is for doing so.

Hi, some places in Canada will actually take US money. I worked at a grocery store for years in Canada and frequently accepted US money. You may not get the best exchange rate though. Like Explorer1310353, debit cards are always an option as most stores should accept them (just make sure your bank knows that you are traveling).

    Hope this helps,

In Canada we do often take American money, and generally consider the coins to be interchangeable. (quarters, nickels, pennies, dimes, etc.) But in the U. S. they WILL NOT take Canadian. It’s kind of comical. I bought a chocolate bar down there and they threw my dime back at me.

you will get a MUCH better exchange rate at a mall then you will at the airport. I would suggest just getting cash before you come over instead or worrying about finding a place to exchange it when you get here. And use your debit/credit as well.
