Assuming you are a guy you will be perfectly safe. Thought I wouldn’t go wandering around at 4 am in the seedier parts of town or back allies. My sister and I went in July 2001 and walked everywhere. Just watch out for large crowds and pickpockets on the metro. Police now have a large presence downtown since then I was back there in 2006 no worries.

I’m a women and I spent five days there by myself in November and I felt perfectly safe. I probably felt more safe there than anywhere else in the US because there are police everywhere.
That isn’t to say you shouldn’t be careful. I made sure I always knew where my bag was and I didn’t carry around huge amounts of cash. I didn’t feel comfortable taking the subway after about 9pm at night so I took cabs if I was out after then.
But I walked around the west side near my hotel at night and I felt fine. It’s a wonderful city and really doesn’t deserve the reputation it has. Just be aware and you’ll be fine.- 0 people like this

I agree, I spent 9 days and there was perfectly safe albeit, very aware.
I was pretty much back in my room by 9pm every night (unless I was out with other people).
In all my travellers I generally go to bed earlish and get up and about early, for some reason I always feel safer when it’s daytime and that works for me just fine!- 0 people like this

<!--graemlin::(--> Went everywhere alone including bball game, rnb concerts and shopping in harlem, brooklyn, manhatten and got a train to new jersey as there is a massivre outlet there that i would def recommend! you will meet people everywhere you go and its not easy to get lost as the streets are all numbers and trains are soo easy and safe no matter what time! good luck- 0 people like this

I’m always amazed how people from other countries think that NYC is somehow unsafe. Yea, it’s a big city and things certainly do happen, but compared to other cities in the world it’s pretty tame. And the mayor is always talking about how it’s the safest big city in America and has been for a number of years, particularly in areas frequented by tourists.
My biggest piece of advice: if you’re taking a taxi make sure you take a yellow one with a meter. We also have black livery taxi’s who are more likely to try and scam you – they are supposed to be pre-hired.- 0 people like this

New York used to have a reputation as the murder capital of the world but that was decades ago! Rudy completely changed NY with his cop on every corner policy, and now New York is probs one of the safest big cities in the world. I have spent heaps of time there by myself, also as a young woman, and never felt in any danger.
New York is amazing- have fun!- 0 people like this

Most of that stuff happens in other places. Crime was bad in the 70’s and 80’s. I think the crime rate is back to the levels in the 1960’s.
Shocking that American TV would make America look bad…- 0 people like this
