The 15 hour plane trip? Ugh.
19 Aug 2010 KaitA7X asked
So.. I'm incredibally anxious and nervous about the long non-stop Quantas flight from Melbourne to LAX, and I was wondering - what things should I do to keep myself occupied, or keep myself from worrying about everything since I have a terrible fear of flying.
What did, or have you guys done on your extremely long plane trips?

<!--graemlin::)--> i can watch lots of movies but try nad take a break in between movies, go for a little walk, visit the toilet.
try not to read heaps as i get a headache, but maybe read a little in between movies,
and even take some of those take 5 magazines, the ones with the quizzes in them, they are fun and take up time, maybe even suduko if your into it?
i have been to europe a couple of times so i know the long flights, try and space yourself alternating walking, movie, sleep, watch a tv show, read, listen to your ipod, and all over again!- 0 people like this

Good advice!
I agree that sleep is the best way to pass the time quickly but I don’t know many people who could sleep for 15hrs anyway LOL.
If you have time before you leave, on a weekend maybe, you could try taking some sleeping tablets and see how they work for you.
I also like to get an aisle seat so I can get up and move whenever I want. I hate being stuck in the corner.
I feel your pain though, we’re planning for our trip next year and I’m already dreading what will probably only be a 10-12 hour flight…if only we could ALL afford business class hey!- 0 people like this

I would try to plan when you want to sleep on your flight. You want to try to get yourself on the schedule of your destination so if you’re leaving home at night but arriving in the morning then you want to try to stay up for a good chunk of time before sleeping.
Then as others said, break things up so you’re not doing any one thing too long.
Check out what type of in-flight entertainment that your airline has. Then bring a book, magazines, ipod, soduko, journal, psp – whatever types of small things that interest you like that. For your flight home make sure you camera battery is charged up, then you can cry as you go through your pictures and reminisce about your trip.
And bring a few snacks and candy. that way if the food sucks or if you get hungry between meals you have that.
I’m doing a overnight flight to the UK, I picked a window seat so I can sleep undisturbed (if you can call it that), but for a day flight a prefer an aisle so i can get up and move around.- 0 people like this

Qantas is awesome! Sorry, had to be said. They have really great choices for movies. (I watched The Young Victoria 4 times and it hadn’t even been released in the US yet..) They feed you very well and the time will fly, trust me.

In between watching movies and listening to music, you can start a conversation with the people nearby. It’s amazing how quickly time passes when you’re having an interesting discussion.
If you find the talk boring, then that’s a good thing too. It’ll help send you to sleep. =)- 0 people like this

i know what you mean, my first long flight was to the US. i flew on the A380 which, trust me, is alot better than the 747. They have an awesome selection of movies and games to entertain you. if you alternate between movies and reading it kills alot of time.
other than that, the planes so big, go for a walk…even standing at the back of the plane and stretching kills time.- 0 people like this

SLEEP
Last trip I took, left Melbourne at 12:30pm and arrived in LA at 7am – perfect for keeping your body clock in sync if you can sleep. I stayed up all night the night before I left so I was tired anyway, had some herbal tea as soon as I got on the plane, popped on my sleeping mask, blanket… worked wonders as I slept 8 of the 14 hours! Arrived in LA rested and ready to go.
Half a sleeping pill also works too :-)- 0 people like this

Buy one of those travel pillows. I had never had one before and always found it hard to sleep. Then I got one for Christmas and it’s so good. I slept for hours at a time on a flight to Moscow and didn’t have a horrible neck ache.

Make the most of the in flight entertainment, try to get some sleep, and bring a Steig Larsson book (seriously, they are impossible to put down). I’m also a big fan of crosswords, sudukos and puzzles for the plane, they tend to be very absorbing so by the time you’ve finished a particularly tricky one an hour might have passed.

I’ve done the Qantas LA to Melbourne and Melbourne to LA a couple times now, and it really isn’t bad at all (I was dreading it too). I brought a book and my ipod and the time passes by quickly between reading, sleeping, and watching their in-flight entertainment, which is also pretty good. Qantas will feed you a lot and also their seats have fairly good leg room and are comfy. I noticed that during my flights a lot of the seats at the back were not full and many people had 2 seats to themselves to lie down on, so when you are checking in you should ask to be beside an empty seat

A window seat is nice if you are the type of person who needs something to put a pillow against in order to sleep.
Watching a few movies, read a few magazines, and if you have an ipad/ipod playing a few games. I think the time goes by fast if you have someone to talk with as well.
Also, check out seatguru.com before booking your flight. This website will tell you the best seats on the plane as well as which airplanes/seats have power points for your ipod/laptop. The site will also tell you about if the plane has any type of audio/video on the back of the seat in front of you.
I usually save up my frequent flyer miles and fly first class on long haul flights. Being able to have a sleeper bed as well as nice meals is a major plus. Just be careful on your alcohol consumption as it will effect you more on a flight.- 0 people like this
