What tube pass should I buy in London?

I've been told that while travelling in London and using the tube you can buy passes basd on regions you would like to see. Should I get a geberal one to get from Heathrow to the Royal National and then get another pass which emcompasses more areas or should I get one that's for more areas from the beginning. Also, what areas should I get it for if I want to see the general things (stay mostly in the central area). Is there a specific name/colour/number code for all the different types of passes you can get?

Thanks!

Best thing to do is buy an oyster card when you get to Heathrow. This is a pre-pay card that you use on all london transport and its cheaper than buying your journeys individually. If you go to www.tfl.gov.uk/oyster that will have all the info you need. The card itself costs £3 (but you get that back if you return the card when you leave) – the card is very clever too in that it will only allow you to spend the maximum of whatever the cost of a 1 day travel card is in any one day. You can also top up the card from all tube stations as you please too and check your balance on the web. The problem with the Underground is that no matter what your distance of journey, the cost of the journey is £4.50 (i think…), so you can go across london or just 2 stops and it is the same price. Central London is pretty small though and you will be amazed just how close everything is on foot.

You should be able to pick the oyster card up from most news stands and all tube stations

i dont remember what its called, but a few years ago when i was in london for a week, i bought a pass at victoria station travel office that was good for a week and could be used unlimited on both busses and the tube. i also know you can buy day passes and multi day passes, weekend passes etc from the machines in the tube stations. it all depends on how long you plan to be there and how much use of public transportation you plan for. i found that i LOVED walking around the city so i either did that or took the bus so i could see what was going on. just a personal preference though.
