Tours which end in different cities

My question is kind of complicated; bear with me.
If anyone has done tours where you start in one city, and end in another (example: Berlin to Budapest) -- how did you head back?
Did you book different flights? (Your City to Berlin, then Budapest to Your City)
or, did you take a train/bus to the original city?

In my case, the travel agent booked the flights such that the departing flight left from the last city on the tour.

I’ve got a tour starting in London and then ending in Rome and then I’m going to America for a different tour. My travel agent booked a mini around the world fare for me (Aus to London, Rome to LA, LA to Aus). My flight to LA goes via London. However, if the city you’re ending in is relatively close to the city you’re departing from, Europe has an excellent train system. Otherwise just fly home from the departing city.
