Has anyone got helpful tips for the grand southern
Hey guys I'm travelling alone doing the grand southern on the 16th of August and I was just wondering if anyone has any tips or feedback about it. I know it's 2 months away but I still wouldn't mind knowing before I go. Also anyone with tips on LA would be greatly appreciated.

tips on LA: apart from Disneyland, the Warner tour and the beaches (Santa Monica, Venice) LA is dull and not worth visiting!
i did the grand southern almost 2 years ago i loved it!!
advice – take a business card from some of the hotels (or keep the minilist of hotels the tour manager gives you) helps when trying to tell taxi drivers where to go after a few drinks!!! lol
just be open to try things thats all – have fun with it!!! everyone is there to enjoy themselves!
regarding LA, depending on how long you have there – i did a tour of la, saw the sights, and that was enough, disneyland is awesome, universal is great fun (if your keen to spend some $$$ i recomend the VIP tour they offer its about $270 – entry to park, fast pass, tour guide, lunch and you have a smaller bus to travel the lot with and you get to explore the props warehouse which is fun!!)
im going back in july and spending more time there, but its more to see studio tours and theme parks.
Ok cool thanks for that. The tip about the business card is great. What was your favourite part of the trip. I’m looking forward to it all and partying up a storm.
are you sure your ready for this? this may be a long post! lol
sorry in advance.
Vegas – when you guys go to watch the light show – one bar does cheap (i think $2 or $4) shots (lost some money here i shouted a round) and the other does $15 cocktails in plastic footballs – always a good start to the night (make sure u pack dress shoes for here)
the Grand Canyon, so much fun – when your at the local store – stock up on some drinks – we all went and watched the sun set on the canyon and had our drinks in water bottle, good fun we all really bonded here!
texas is great fun (hope they still give you a beer when you get to amarillo – rude if you say no – they normally have left overs so keep an ear out for the left over beer call(its free lol). also the hotel itself – i swear i felt like i was in a porn movie but it was fun). the rodeo is fun, we all dressed up for it.
i wasnt overly eager beaver for memphis, but i loved memphis. the night life is amazing, the street performers, the bars, the atmosphere. Gracelands was awesome.
i was so keen for new orleans (it didnt disapoint) – i didnt do any of the optionals here, so i had a bit of time to explore, we caught a taxi to one of the main cemeterys and had a look (blame anne rice) and then walked back to the hotel, we got to walk past the house they filmed the curious case of benjamin button, sandra bullocks house, but the houses themselves were amazing.
orlando – i’m such a big kid so i had to go to universal studios – harry potter world had just opened when we went and it was great to enjoy it all and be a big kid, also if you a fan of rides – go universal over disneyland.
miami – a must do optional is the party boat – watching the sun set on miami while its an open bar….. perfect atmosphere! the beach is sweet, we went and sussed out miami ink – it was $100 to get a tattoo the size of a 50c piece, so a whole group went down the street and got tattoos. drinks here are expensive!
washington – was my favourite place – the museums, were insane. i spent money and went to the crime and punishment museum, loved it – now i’m not your normal lets go to a museum person but washington is insane and i could spend a week there and still want to see more. all the momuments etc. here is where it really hit, we drove past the pentagon on our way in to washington and you can see the different colour of the stone used to rebuild after sept 11. it may sound weird but to me it was…. the thing that made it real.
new york – i hope your staying here for a few days – its so worth it – one of my favourite cities! times square is great (stay away from there if its a weekend lol), central park is relaxing, statue of liberty is something to say you have seen. i’m going back for a few days before my contiki starts next month and theres so much to do. if you need to buy gifts – century 21 – right near where the twin towers were – discounted perfumes or bags and things for family members or hit canal street – try your luck on getting either a stolen or a real bag depending on who you buy from. also great for the 1 <3 NY shirts (buy from here its so much cheaper) also i got some NYPD and NYFD shirts for my mates.
ok i think thats enough for now, if there are any places you want to know about – just ask, happy to help. i’ll be in america while you are, my contiki finishes on 14th in LA, and i fly out the 30th.
Thats really helpful. Thank you very much. I can’t wait. I have a week in new York after the contiki. It should be good. I want to go to ground zero on the 11th of September. I reckon that would put it all into perspective. What sort of spending money did you take. Cause that’s what I’m really stressing about at the moment.
ok now bare in mind i’m a shopper – i had $150 a day – not inc optionals…. cause i’m a shopper. it lasted me until new york, but thats ok i had money i could transfer across. if your not going to spend like i did, your sweet. people say to budget as much as your tour cost. but i did it $50 for drinking $100 for food and fun but more of that went to drinking. dinners with groups got me – some people were just tight and refused to pay their part of the tip and i’d just go for crying out loud – here take my money i wanna go explore or what not. you learn who not to eat with!
a lot of days are travel days so you might buy some nibbles for the bus and thats it – others you spend a whole lot (aka me in vegas) my thought its go over prepared so you can say you did what you want to do, not go – oh i wish i did that but i couldnt afford it.
That’s what I was looking at doing. I was looking at taking 10 grand. I have 16 days by myself before and after the tour how much did you take. I’m plannin on taking like 2 pairs of clothes and buying the rest over there lol. Where abouts Dod you do all your shopping and that in LA and new York.
my shopping in la – i didnt really do unless u count walmart, but in new york, maceys and time square there are some shops but if ur gonna buy clothes there vegas and orlando have the best outlets!
i cant remember how much i took but i had $150 in cash (i was there for 6 weeks) and a credit card which paid for all the optionals and etc
