Americans--Travelers checks/cash/debit or credit cards???

I'm from the U.S. and was wondering what it would type of "currency" it would be best for me to bring. My credit card has a high enough limit, but my mother still insists that travelers checks are best...and I know I should probably bring some "just in case" cash, but how much is too much? I'm only going for thirteen days (the 12-day Amsterdam to Barcelona tour with one extra day in Amsterdam). Thanks in advance!
