Arriving alone??

Doing a Contiki solo isn't the part the I'm most concerned with: It's the full day that I'll have to spend in a foreign city alone with my luggage! Most of the hotels have 2 pm check in times, but do they also have a place to check or stash your luggage until then?
Also, what would be best for a female tourist to do on her own before meeting the group? (If the advice you have is specific to Rome, that would be great!)
