Advice for Winter in Europe?

Hey everyone,
I'm booked for a Winter Wanderer tour over December 2012/Jan 2013 and I was just looking for general tips/advice on what to pack considering it will be so cold, what to do/see and basically anything else along those lines?
Also, has anyone purchased a sim card overseas for data/calls, just wondering the pricing and whether it was worth it?
