Suitcase:What size luggage are u gonna take? i know they gave us a specified size but isn't it better to take a smaller piece that extends a couple of inches with the pull of a zipper? is it ok to get a suitcase one inch bigger than what they mentioned? do they really enforce the 44lbs/ 20?  Do they check before, during and after? I prob sound paranoid but oh hell :P

-Handbag: we can only take one..but i think the airplan limit is two.  can we take two at the end of the trip??? Also are these suppose to be a specific weight and size. Is the handbag weight included in the suitcase weig?  or is it sep?

thanks for ur reply;  appreciate it a lot
Now i got to get some sleep, Meri

One handbag or day bag … just for bus & day essentials. Do not think of carry-on as in a plane … space is very limited on the bus or else you will sacrifice comfort. Perhaps small backpack.

    Hey

Im taking a suitcase that is the max size allowed, a carry on plane bag that goes with it, a day pack that will be carried off the bus that i will put in my carry-on plane bag the first day, and a small bag to take to the clubs and out for tea. The day pack will be in the carry-on until after the tour starts and the club bag will be in my suitcase until the first night so it will work out.

Ive been on a bus b4 with the carry on plane bag and comfort wasn’t an issue when it was by my feet.

Why so many bags? coz i can and i wanna!!!!

nah seriously, i need a suitcase for the main stuff, a carry-on plane bag for toiletries and chage of clothes and things to do in the 20hr plane flight, taking a small day pack but this wouldn’t be big enough to carry a change of clothes or to be used as the overnight bag we need. and i wanna take an old small handbag to the clubs so if i get drunk and lose it i won’t mind (im taking disposable camera to club not the good one).

If i get pressed for room on the bus i can always collapse the carry-on plane bag and shove it in the suitcase or fill it up with gifts and ship it home.

It will seem to the airplane people and contiki that i only have the carry-on and suitcase but hey im a girl and need a few different bags.

    Hi all,

This is quoted for the Contiki Europe Travellers Guide which you will recieve along with all of your travel documents about 3 weeks prior to departure.

“Baggage is restricted to one reasonably sized suitcase. Please ensure your suitcase is NO LARGER that 29”x20"x10" (73cmx50cmx25cm) and a maximum weight of 20kgs (44lbs) (non expanding) for all Time Out/Superior and Concept/Budget tours . . . On all tours the suitcase size and wieght is very strictly enforced. . . . Only 1 small piece of hand luggage will be allowed onto the coach (maximum weight of 5kg). These requirements are for your own comfort and safety. Please ensure that your suitcase is the correct size before depature. If not you will be asked to change your suitcase on the morning of depature thus incurring extra costs of a new suitcase and storage of excess luggage."

They don’t weigh your day bag but they do expect you to walk onto the coach carrying only ONE bag, and the weight restriction is there, I think, to emphasize the word SMALL in that sentence. I think that you are picturing something like a “carry-on” at the airport, but what Contiki means by “hand luggage” is your purse or backpack, or whatever it is that you are going to be carrying around Europe with you everyday, all day long.

Mostly, people either talk to each other or enjoy the scenery, or sleep on the coach – there really is no need for a whole bag full of junk on the coach. If you carry a good sized day-pack with you while you are out sightseeing, that is really all you need. You can fit some snacks, a bottle of water, a light sweater, and a deck of cards or a journal into your day-pack so, what more do you really need? The only time you will need a change of clothes is if you have an overnight stop where you need to pack an overnight bag and your TM will warn you well in advance so that you can pack one in the morning, just for that night. I kept a small nylon tote bag folded up in my suitcase for such an occasion. It was handy to have the empty tote bag at the end of the tour b/c I used it as a carry-on for the flight home for some of my more fragile souveniers.

While the TM’s and drivers may not flat out tell you that you can’t have an extra bag on the coach, they don’t encourage you to bring one either and mine actually told us that they didn’t recommend leaving anything on the coach during the day while you are out sightseeing. There have been break-ins and daybags that are left get stolen. Also, while you are out having fun, the Driver is often left behind to clean the coach. They clean the coach almost every day and it is so much easier to clean when it is not full of people’s stuff that they left all over the place.

    Happy Travels!
    Sarah
