Hey everyone,

I am considering a trip to Europe next year sometime and was probably going to do a Contiki tour around Europe. At the end of my trip though, I would like to travel around the UK for about a week or so, mainly England and Wales (and if I ave time Scotland).

Can anybody who has been before advise me on the best and cheapest ways to travel around the UK. I have been to various rail and bus websites, and am aware of a discount pass for 16-25 year-olds. Any bus or train company names and their websites would be great.

National Express has some pretty good deals normally, If I remember right it cost me about 27pounds to go from london to Edinburgh with them.
And to go to Wales you can pay anything from the 5.50 up to around 22pounds depending on what is available when you book.
I keep getting good offers from them in email as well, a month ago they had a deal on london to edinburgh for 18pounds return.
Even airfare is pretty cheap, itd be about 50 to fly to Edinburgh with easyjet.

You might want to take a look at Haggis Tours, they are very popular and not as guided as a contiki tour.

MacBackpackers also does some pretty nice tours around the Highlands of Scotland.

I just had another question. Does anybody know of any budget accomodation around the towns of Manchester, Liverpool, Edinborough, London etc.

Also, has anybody been around the UK solo before without a tour group? Is it safe to travel alone or would you recommend a group like Haggis?

I’ve traveled alone all over England/Scotland/Ireland and a small bit of Wales, the UK is in my mind as safe as Aus/NZ/Canada. I have yet to feel un-safe anywhere in the UK. Thats not to say some areas wont be a bit tough, but overall everyone is friendly. More so in Scotland and Ireland, all you need to do in order to make a friend there is to mock the English a bit.
Personally Id say groups like Haggis and MacBackpackers are better for the day trips to stops a bit harder to get to like Loch Ness, Loch Lomond, or the weekend type tours then for the longer tours, the UK is easy and pretty cheap to get around. If you’d rather be with people while seeing things, then a coach tour might be better, but you shouldn’t have a worry of traveling alone.
As for hostels, Castle Rock in Edinburgh is pretty spot on, great location! As for London Hostel 639 is loads of fun, if you want to do a search for nice hostels just check out Hostel World loads of great info on there.
