Suitcase or Backpack!!!

I'm not really sure what to take...
As i'll be travelling for 2 months i don't know whether to take a backpack or suitcase.
I'm going on the Grand Adventurer and Beaches and Reefs in October/November. With a few stops in Oz before and after the tours.
Because i'm travelling for so long, i wanna travel light and wash clothes whenever i can. Will i need things like Hiking Boots? as i don't own a pair and think they will be bulky to take around! will normal trainers do?
any ideas would help be loads!
