Traveling to Aus a few weeks before a tour... can I do this?

Hi everyone!
Would it be possible for me to travel to Australia a few weeks prior to the start of a tour? I have friends who live Australia who I'd want to visit before the tour starts, and maybe again after it ends. Is airfare booking done only through Contiki, or can I book it seperately?
