Question about ferries in Greece

Hey everyone,
I'm actually going on the Mediterranean highlights tour with contiki (aug 31), but once it's done I'm meeting a friend and going to Greece for our own island hopping experience.
That said, I'm having a hard time picking my flights as I have NO idea how long ferries take between athens and the islands or what their schedules are like - can anyone offer some advice?
