I'm doing the England and Scotland trip in the summer and I'm arriving a couple days early to do a bit of sightseeing on my own. One of the things I'd love to do and see is a tour of Highclere Castle, where they film Downton Abbey. Has anyone done this before and if so do they know the best way to go about it both economically and time wise?

I haven’t been there but I have read that Highclere castle is only open certain times of the year. I believe this summer it is only open certain days in August and you have to book in advance because they tend to sell out quickly. Viator.com offers trips to the castle if you are going during the time it is open. That is probably the easiest way to get there without having to rent a car.
