Question regarding places to stay, and laptop q's.

Well I'm doin' Beaches and Reefs in Sept, and will be in Syd for a week beforehand to check out a couple shows and such. Anyway...some of the hostels in Kings Cross are what people are reccomending to me, and do you know if this is close to downtown..
Specifically..tourist attractions..and PS...how far abouts is Luna Park from King's Cross??

PS: And in regards to a laptop...since I'll be in Aus for a long time after and before the Beacjhes tour..is it pretty safe to bring a computer?? Thanksss!!!
