All I can say is DO IT!

I did the Grand Southern on Dec 3 last year and it was amazing. It’s the best way to see a bit of everything and it really does give you a feel for the true American life.

You have plenty of time in most of the cities to see everything you want to see. Towards the end of the tour, from Orlando onwards, things can be a bit hectic as there a few one night stops but hey, it is what it is and they don’t detract from the tour as a whole.

Unfortunately we didn’t get to go to New Orleans, we were re-routed through Nashville which was also a great city. Shame about missing out on the South but sometimes these things happen.

My best advice is to go with an open mind and take everything you see and do as a new experience. Don’t expect anything and you can’t be disappointed!

Also, do everything you want to do while you get the chance. I made the mistake of not going to Disneyland in LA because I knew we were going to have 3-days in Orlando on our tour in which to see the sights. Unfortunately in Orland I got struck down with bronchitis and a chest infection so I only got 4hrs at Disneyland as opposed to 3-days! I still got to see enought of Disneyland in that time, the main part, but I didn’t get to go to any of the other ‘Disney Worlds’ which was a real shame.

Buy you want when you see it too, don’t think you will find it better somewhere or cheaper, it’s inevitable that you won’t!

My fav places and things to do were:
Memphis – Graceland and Sun Studios (even if you’re not an Elvis fan, you will be spellbound…get that tingley feeling and all)

New York – one of the best cities in the World and now, I understany why! I’m not sure what tour you’re doing in New York after the trip but I’m not sure it would be necessary. Heaps of people from your bus will stay on for a few days at least (who wouldn’t) and you can see most of the city with them and in your own good time. New York is really easy to get around, both on foot and by subway and you will know what you want to see there without needing a bus and tour guide to tell you so!

Disneyland – of course, it really is the happiest place on earth!

Grand Canyon – Breathtaking. Do the helicopter ride, even if it’s just the short 30minute one. It’s amazing.

Vegas – Party capital. Awesome casino’s. Great fun.

Oh, who am I kidding, it was all good. GO FOR IT and enjoy! Message me if you have any other questions, be glad to help.

What did you see in NY? I imagine you stayed in midtown and just saw all the landmarks.

As a Californian, I am obligated to mention that DisneyLAND in California is different than DisneyWORLD in Florida. Disneyland is the original, smaller and more “magical”. Disneyworld is a huge sprawling park (which actually consists of several seperate parks) that was built later – after Walt Disney died.

Yeah, I stayed at the Contiki Hotel (the Beacon) and saw everything and anything I could around NY city. I was there nine days and didn’t even get the chance to go to jersey (home of my all time fav, Bon Jovi) so take as much time as you can!

Also remember that lines are killer in NY…we went to the Empire State and had a three-hour wait ahead of us. Needless to say we left and went back first thing in the morning! It also took us the best part of half a day to get over the Statue of Liberty, check it and get back so allow time for things like that.

Also, with Statue of Liberty BIG NOTE: You have to ring up and book your place to climb Liberty the day before you want to go over. I got my ticket to go to Liberty Island as part of the Hop-On-Hop-Off bus tour of NY and that DOES NOT include the ticket to the top of Ms Liberty herself. Just a word of warning there!

Bon Jovi rocks!! Im actually from NY, and I think a trip to the statue of liberty would be a huge waste of time. Your online for like 2 hours just to see a view you can get from the adjacent museum.

Why thank you, I think so too! I actually stopped off in Toronto for a month in January on my way home just to see the concerts, saw 3/4 shows they played there, I missed out on the last one…bugger!

    Hey
I am looking at doing the grand southern at the same time next year, and was going to stay in New York for a week longer. I did the NYC 3 day tour a couple of years ago, and was worth it. But I think I will give it a miss this time and just do my own thing. It is fairly easy to do your own thing in New York, but the tour helps you find your feet.
    Have you travelled much before?
I contacted contiki today and they said the tour dates will be released mid september. Can’t wait!!!

    HI Katherine
When are you looking at doing the Grand Southern? I was looking at doing it around 30th June 2007. If this is similar to when you were looking maybe we could keep chatting. If not, have a great trip, it will be awesome whenever you go!

    Lisa,
Thanks for all the info! Very very helpful. Can’t wait to go now, only about 8 months to go!! Seems like a lifetime away. Anyway, i will take on board everything you have mentioned here, and if there is anything else you may have forgotten it would be great to hear from you. Thanks

Have you booked yet? I simply cannot wait to do the Sex and The City Tour in NYC! My email address is brooke_martin@hotmail.com if you would like to send me an email and we can keep in touch before the tour, and keep me updated on exactly what date you’re going. Cheers! Brooke.

    Hi Brooke,
Cohuna is near Echuca along the Murray, about 3 hours away from you. Only a little town.
Not sure if you have read any other message boards on here, but this is my situation: I am a teacher and my contract is up at the school I’m working at. They cannot put me back on due to the decline in numbers at the school. So at this stage I am looking for a job. There isn’t much going around here, so not looking good. Anyway, my point of all this rambling on it, I can’t book the tour until I know I have a job next year, otherwise I won’t be able to afford it!!! So as soon as I have a job organised then I am booking the 30th June – 23rd July Grand Southern tour.
I can’t wait until that day! I have been looking forward to this trip for months now, and just can’t wait to book!
Anyway, let me know what you are planning on doing, it would be great to keep in touch.
    Nikki
