regular debit or visa/masterard debit?

This is probably going to sound completely stupid... but this little fear popped into my head and asking about it is what the forum is for... soooo...

i've been planning on taking a few hundred euros with me, and then withdraw the rest of an ATM. this is all fine and dandy, but then i started reading about ATM's on the forum and noticed everyone was talking about withdrawing cash from a visa or mastercard debit card!

i had just planned on using my regular ol' debit card (it has cirrus on the back so i thought it was good to go). i've even made a second debit card in case a machine eats one...

am i missing something? or can i go ahead with my original plan? which one is better?
