Question Featured_post

What do you wish you'd known?

18 Jul 2007 ashleightara asked

ashleightara
I'm curious to know what ppl wish they'd known before they went on their trips, and only discovered afterwards...

For example,
Did you miss something in a town you wish you'd known about?
Did you pack something, and never used it?
Did you NEED something you didn't pack and had to go in search of it?

In particular, looking for different advice to what is already available on the board...share you experience so others can learn from you 'mistake'.

Thanks Smiler

I’m about to head off in 9 weeks to Europe for about a month – and a European discovery tour. I have been a major stresshead about what to take with me.

Having read this forum end to end, i have a LONG list of stuff to take and i feel relieved to know im not overpacking to have teh things i was thinking about bringing…… myboy thinks i overdo things – well you all prove that i am better off!

Thank you all so much for your wonderful advice – when i get back i will come back and tell you all how useful my list was!

thanks for all the great tips guys and gals. so many things i have added extra to my list of essentials. im off on the euro discovery next year in March, woohoo :O)

im a bit concerend with the “contiki cough” everyone has been talking about. sounds like alot of people get sick
also alot of people have said thank god for motion sickness tablets while on the ferry from london to france. is the water that choppy? or is it only bad for people that naturally suffer from sea sickness
please somebody let me know if the ferry trip is really bad. cheers

Hey I get motion sickness and I was ok on the ferry from Dover to France. I did take some motion sickness tablets but I did that for all the days we were on the bus too. Didn’t get sick once.

The two things I wished I had known to ask are 1) the number of couples on the tour and 2) if a large group of people from a specific area have booked on the tour.

I just completed a tour (19 days) and half the people were couples (~11 couples), and out of those couples, maybe 8 of them were married / engaged. As a single person looking to have fun with the group (i.e. partying), the couples were pretty boring (although half were quite nice and fun to hang out with) as they spent their nights in the hotel rooms. And the girls would get jealous of the single girls when the single girls spoke with their ‘man.’ Although most of the most were cool after they realized we weren’t out to ‘steal’ their man:S There were a 3-4 couples who actually partied it up with the singles and were just awesomeSmiler<!--graemlin::)-->

As for the group from a specific area (i.e. group is from Paris) – it becomes a challenge for singles to mingle with people who already kinda know each other. It took about 10 days before our tour group started to mingle…

Point I’m trying to make: if you’re single… check with Contiki how many couples will be on the tour and, single or not, if a specific area of the world has booked a significant portion of the seats. But I guess it depends on what it is you want out of the trip…

i don’t know if this helps but one of the girls in the group formed faqcebook pages so i have at least seen and vaguely chatted to about 20 or so people on the tours its a nice easy way to pre-meet people on the tours

WOW everyone has so many great points i didnt think i was going to get so much advice. im going on the european whirl with my boyfriend
my own question for those who have been is, im thinking of taking my laptop its only small 13" on the bus do you think it would be safe??? a speaking of safe what is the deal with safe’s at hostels and hotels? do they have them and how much would i be looking at paying for one?
    cheers Megsy

  • 13 Nov 2008 **Lucy** said

I probably wouldnt take a laptop on tour. I just came back from a contiki tour and no one had one. In the hotels and hostels I dont really remember any of them having safes, maybe Amsterdam did and there are no locks on the bedroom doors in Switzerland so they give you lockers in your room instead. Our TM just suggested that we lock our belongings in our suitcase each time we left our room. I wouldnt risk taking something of that value on tour. The most expensive thing I took was my Ipod. A few of the places you stay at have internet access and as for keeping yourself occupied during the bus rides, 99% of our group were asleep on the bus each day because that was the only shut-eye any of us got.

    Hope it helps.

And P.S. No matter HOW much medicine you pack, you will get sick. I had a pharmacy in my suitcase and I was bed-ridden with Bronchitis and had to pay 50euro to see an Austrian Doctor. I would say 90% of the bus were sick. It sucks but the overall experience makes up for it….youll have the time of your life.

I went to the Adventure and Travel Ezpo today in Brisbane and this NZ couple were talking to me while in the line and they said that before you go to Milford Sound, you should take heaps of B vitamins as it helps with the sandflies that swamp people out that way.

Also found out at one talk that Doubtful sound is pretty much the same as Milford, but only has 4-500 visitors a day compared to 4000 at MIlford.

Also got 50% off gear at Kathmandu….so if your near a expo, get to one

I did the Berlin to Prague tour in June 08.

what I had wish I had known

    1. European women dress very classy! My sweat pants and t-shirts made me stand out like a sore thumb! Plus, other girls on tour had caught on to this and were nicely dressed!

    2. Bandaides are essential! You walk a lot…pack a lot of bandaides!

    3. Brought more memory cards for my camera!

    4. Taxis will rip you off if they figure out you’re a tourist. I now refuse to use a taxi while on vacation unless I really need one!

    What I’m glad I did

    1. I didn’t bring a laptop or portable DVD player! Too expensive to loose and too expensive to lug around!

    2. Researched how to get from the airport to my hotel ahead of time.

    3. Didn’t drink too the point of votmiting! Got drunk…a lot…but didn’t waste any time sleeping it off in my hotel room while the rest opf the tour had fun.

    Hey!!
past few days i read all through this, because im about to do the winter tour through europe in like 2 weeks!

My travel agent told me to pack up some Snap lock lunch bags!! because… when you have complimentry breaky in the hotel, pack yourself some lunch and slip it into your handbag, and you just saved yourself a heap of euros for the day!

i have packed up cold and flu medicine, wet wipes, hand sanitiser, pretyt much everything that it says i shouldnt leave behind,

but i cant see any advice on how much money to bring?!

also SHOULD i bring a hairdryer? i have my wet to dry GHD hair straightener, but i have thick hair so im still not sure? everyone is like Yes and No

    advice please!!

    Great thread

ToniZoso I too am struggling with this question and I think wet to staright is the way to go, you save time and if you happen get up before your room mates and shower early atleast you wont have the noise of the hairdryer to wake them

Great thread, definitely many things I already thought about bringing, but some stuff there I would never have thought about.

I’m in the some situation with the hair straightener, but I will probably bring one cause I’m spending a few weeks in the USA before I hit the Grand Southern Contiki tour… I’m also praying I’m not the oldest there lol Big Grin<!--graemlin::D-->

Hey I’m also from Australia. It’s hard to say what the Australian winter is like because it is so different from state to state and even town to town. I would also recomend the www.bom.gov.au site – you should find it helpful.

    Cheers

How old are you and which dates are you going? I am turning 24 on the April 16 to May 11 tour, and judging by the people on the board for that tour, I am in the younger half.
