Where to stay in Paris?

I'm planning on staying in Paris somewhere for a week or so during june-aug when i'm in europe this year and i was wondering if anyone could suggest a good area to stay in. I'll be travelling solo, i'm female and this is the first time i've ventured off on my own. I've heard of the different sections of Paris but i don't know which are safe and which aren't. I'd also be looking at hostel or really cheap hotel accomodation as i'm on a budget. I don't really mind that the accomodation isn't 5 star however i would like the basic sercuritys at least. Alot of the hostels i've looked at dont even have security lockers. If anyone has any advice on where to stay please reply, i'd appreciate any help i can get =P
