URGENT Rail Pass Question

Hey all,
I'm looking for advice about travelling Europe after Contiki - my friend and I are doing European Encounter then have about 7 weeks...we are hoping to head to Spain, Italy, Greece, Prague & Berlin, then Ireland and UK...ambitious, I know. We are very indecisive, and can't decide about rail passes. Do we get a month? Or two? Or 15 days in two months? Or just pay as we go? Or are we better off just flying? Ooh, and do the rail passes only count for long journeys, or can you use them to say, get around Rome? If anyone has any experience, I would love some advice. Thanks!
