To tour or not?

Hey,
I just wanted some advice...i'm planning on travelling around the US (north) for 6 months starting in May, i'm a 22 yr old girl and i'll be on my own...I have a kinda route i want to take so don't really want to be restricted to a tour but friends have said it might be a good idea to start with a tour to meet people etc...?
