ARRIVING IN LONDON PM -> SAFE TO WANDER ALONE?

hopefully i'll be arriving in London in the morning. But if i arrive early evening, is it safe to wander around London alone??
Is there a bar/eating place in the royal national? -- i thought i read this somewhere?
If it's safe, where is best to go - food, pubs, bar?
Or is it better to just go to bed?!
