1992 Olympic Site - Barcelona

One of the big events to help promote Barcelona as a World Class city was the Olympic Games of 1992. The site where many of the stadiums are located is Mont Juic, a hill that overlooks the city.
Barcelona was meant to host the 1936 games but the Spanish Civil War put an end to these plans and the games went to Berlin and Nazi Germany. Juan Antonio Samaranch, a Barcelona native himself, was key in Barcelona’s bid to host the games.
The event is remembered as one of the best of the modern era. The most memorable moments and athletes of the games include the ‘Dream Team’ mens USA basketball team, Linford Christie, Gail Devers, Carl Lewis, Kieren Perkins and the lighting of the Olympic Torch with a bow and arrow. It was also a period of great change in the world with the break up of the former Yugoslav and Soviet Blocs, the reunification of Germany the first competition of South Africa since the end of apartheid and the first time Israel had competed since the 1972 Munich games. The Barcelona event was very much seen as a celebration of the times.

A tip for people looking for a decent coffee shop.. if you don't already know about it, you will because most Contiki travellers find out about it - its The Grasshopper. Ask a local and they should be able to tell you where to find it.
If you visit the massive outdoor club Rio, also go next door to the 'Green Pardon' which is much cheaper, and has about 5 bars and three separate dance floors - all outside. Party till the sun rises!
