Belgium is a relatively small country sandwiched between France in the south and the Netherlands in the north and also shares small borders with Germany and Luxembourg in the east.
Most Contiki tours only pass through Belgium in transit, scooting through the flat, green countryside either on the way from or to Amsterdam. The country was part of the Netherlands until they declared their independence in 1830.
Some tours however visit Brussels, the capital, home of the King (Albert II, not Elvis), the European Union and the Manneken Pis, a statue of a little boy taking a leek, is the symbol and icon of the city. Other major cities include Gent and Bruges and the port of Antwerp.
Oft forgotten as they are surrounded by their larger neighbors, the Belgians have some of the finest foods in all of Europe. French fries are just the start as they in fact originated in Belgium but the country is even more famous for waffles, chocolate, mussels and fries, and beers. The country is home to over 500 varieties of beer, the most famous being Stella Artois and Jupiter, however white beers like Hoegaarten, trappist beers like Chimay as well as cherry beers are popular throughout the country. Good Bars serving a wide variety of Belgian beers can be found in the red light district of Amsterdam (as well as almost every other country in the world)
