The Dutch are world leaders in modern architecture and you will see some fantastic modern buildings as you drive in or out of the outskirts of the city. Most people however are most impressed by the beautiful gabled houses that adorn the canals of the historic center of Amsterdam.

Most of the houses and buildings were built during the 15 and 1600’s and it’s not by accident that many of them are no only leaning to the side, but also out over the street. The narrow street fronts also hark back to the days when taxes were paid according to how much street-frontage you owned – the wider your house, the more tax you paid. This made is advantageous for many people to build tall, narrow houses to avoid paying high taxes – the narrowest house in the city being about 80cm (two and a half feet) wide.

A great way to see more of the buildings in the city is to take a Canal Cruise around the city while perhaps the most famous house in the city is the Anne Frank House.
