The town sits at the base of Mt Blanc, the highest mountain in Europe and the surrounding mountain ranges that make up the border regions with nearby <a href="/contikipedia/articles/italy">Italy</a> and <a href="/contikipedia/articles/switzerland">Switzerland</a>. A ski resort town and playground for the wealthy during the winters, summer brings hikers, mountain bikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Although these is little evidence other than the outstanding ski fields, Chamonix also hosted a Winter <a href="/contikipedia/articles/olympic-cities-visited-by-contiki">Olympics</a> in 1924.</p> <p>The must do thing for all visitors to Chamonix is to take the cable car to the <a href="/contikipedia/articles/aiguille-du-midi-chamonix">Aiguille du Midi</a> a lookout just before the peak of Mt Blanc and most tours staying in Chamonix have the opportunity to take the cable car to the top for year-round snow, views of the glaciers and Mt Blanc itself.</p>
