Roughly one third of Finland is within the Arctic Circle and in the far north, the sun does not rise for months at a time during winter. Conversely in this ‘Land of the Midnight Sun’, the sun doesn’t not set for 70 consecutive days in the peak of summer. For this reason, most people live in the south.
Manners and Customs
- Restaurants add a 14% service charge during weekdays and 15% on Sundays and holidays.
- There is no real word in Finnish that translates to ‘Please’ so there is no real way to be polite when asking for something in the local language.
- Unlike their surrounding Scandinavian counterparts, the Finns have no monarchy and are very proud of their democracy.
Food and Drink
Crayfish and smoked reindeer are popular Finnish specialties.
