The Gold Coast is easily Australia’s leading holiday playgrounds with hundreds of thousands of Aussie and international visitors flocking to the area every year.

It’s easy to see why ‘The Coast’ is considered one the most desirable places in the world to live with its 42 kilometers of sun-drenched beaches, World Heritage Listed rainforests, theme parks, shopping and nightlife, it has something for everyone.

Traditionally seen as just a holiday escape destination and extension of the nearby State capital city of Brisbane, the Gold Coast is quickly breaking free of the shackles of it’s northern neighbor to establish itself as a bustling, vibrant and happening city in it’s own right.

When Australians think ‘holiday’ its hard not to be tempted by the glittering Gold Coast.

Home To the iconic (and aptly named) ‘Surfers Paradise’ beach, there are so many more beaches filled with the sun, sand, and surf that the reputation of the region is built upon.

Surfers Paradise

Surfers Paradise is located in the middle of the Gold Coast and is the undisputed heart of the Gold Coast.

In 1925 Brisbane hotel owner Jim Cavill opened the ‘Surfers Paradise Hotel’, and, in doing so, created the areas first real landmark. The hotel became a popular holiday spot and shops and services sprang up around it. In the following years Cavill led a push to have the name of the beach (then ‘Elston’) changed to the more marketable ‘Surfers Paradise’ and in 1933 his lobbying paid off and the town officially acquired its present name.

‘Surfers’ still pays tribute to Jim Cavill as the Cavil Mall takes the name of the areas original founder.

Surfing

Lifesavers

Jupiter’s Casino

Shopping

Theme Parks

Nightlife

Sports and Events

The Gold Coast Hinterland

Other Activities

The leisure opportunities are almost boundless in this recreational paradise and playground. However some of the extra excursions offered on many Contiki Tours visiting the Gold Coast include surfing lessons for the beach lovers, tandem sky diving for adrenaline junkies, Tiger Moth Biplane Flights, Harley Davidson motorcycle tours and Bushwacker rainforest tours for the adventurous.

A Gold Coast institution is Dracula’s cabaret restaurant – always popular with local Queenslander’s and visitors alike and is great for a fun night out. There is also RM Williams Australian Outback Spectacular a little further north.
